32 Gay Street – Hazel Robinson Amphitheater
John Robinson
Built in 1983 on the 17-acre Montford recreation complex, the Hazel Robinson Amphitheater is a cultural mainstay in Asheville’s lively theater scene. The Montford Park Players, founded in 1973 by Hazel Robinson (whose former home is also on the Tour), make the Amphitheater their home, bringing Shakespeare and more to thousands of attendees there each year. The Montford Park Players’ actors and technicians are volunteers and performances are free, with donations gratefully accepted. With a Tudor-style designed stage area and tiered seating under the stars, a visit to the Hazel Robinson Amphitheater is like stepping back into Elizabethan times.
